Les sniffles

Hadleys monster Diamond Nipples block

bit of progress on the two giant stars

the start of a cushion

I have cheered up a bit.  My cold is almost gone and I've been bug free all week too, and boy has it been gooooood.  I've been able to get some sewing done.
I've also (finally) been to the new cinema!  Yes, CINEMA!  With proper big comfy seats, massive screen, awesome sound...  and there were proper cinema go-ers there - people who actually went deathly silent the second the film was about to start!  I haven't experienced that in years.  So, what did I see?

Oh yes.  2 hours and 40 minutes of awesome.  And I think I cried for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes of it.  I went through 3 tissues, the quality thick ones too...  I dabbed at tears til my cheeks felt raw, I bit my lip, sniffed a lot... by the time it got to this song I gave up and just sobbed openly.  (at about 2.20 seconds on that clip)  You know what else?  I wasn't the only one either.  I could actually hear others blubbing too...   It was wonderful!

I'm sure it wont be to everyone's taste, the fact that about 90% of it is sung might have something to do with that.  I've read loads of reviews of it, and I have to say, I thought Russell Crowe was brilliant.  Admittedly, having read reviews I was expecting him to be a bit crap and it wasn't going to bother me;  but quite honestly, he was my favourite!  Maybe my ears aren't as well tuned as some of those movie critics, but he sounded damn good to me.   (I'm a big fan of Mr Jackman but I did notice a few questionable noises from him... so I'm pretty confident my ears work fine!)

I was telling my man all about when I got a phone call, and poor thing was completely bemused... "you cried all through it, and you said you enjoyed it?!"  Yes.  In fact, "enjoyed" just doesn't quite cover it.  I LOVED it.   Clearly he thinks I'm daft.  Its quite possible he's right, it has been known, but perhaps not in this instance.  The phrase exists after all, to 'have a good cry'.  A *good* cry.
Apparently 88% of people feel better after crying.  I've been reading up on it, apparently emotional tears have a completely different chemical make up to eyes-watering tears - crying actually is your body washing out chemical imbalances; it releases stress, reducing chemicals linked to heart disease, cholesterol, and diabetes.  Who'da thunk it?

So in the interest of my health I've been compiling my own compilation weepie; songs and movies that make me bawl.  (So much to choose from, I'm such a softie).  Such fun!  (I know, even as I write I realise how mental I sound...)   But you know what?  I feel so much better!

  1. I know what you mean about enjoying a "good" cry. The scene in Little Women when Beth dies, the closing scene when Rhett Butler leaves Scarlett, most of Beaches, nothing like a good wallow followed by chocolate/cake/icecream/toffee popcorn/chips and dips.

  2. YES YES yes!! I had a HUGE bawl this morning and then felt loads better. I might need another one after the day I've had but it's a good feeling! Gorgeous projects too :)

  3. I was just talking about this film this morning with my old music teacher and she said that R.C. was dire ;o) I think I might have to wait for the dvd, though, as I'm not sure I'll manage all that time in the pictures...
What are you going to see next? (Is it a single screen pictures or do you have a choice to films each week?!)

  4. I always think a good cry is often the answer. I hate going to the cinema so I will wait until its out on dvd

  5. Not a huge fan of musicals, but i can agree on the crying front, I feel it building up over a time, and I need to have a really good cry, and then feel loads better afterwards! And loving the Diamond Nipple Block (that just sounds wrong) : )

  6. I love your name for H's block!! I have heard different reviews for Les Mis - my best friend here hated it but my mum absolutely loved it. I really want to see it but here the cinemas are full of kids talking on their phones and it will be in French. Not. Good.

  7. Glad your feeling better and will look forward to a list of films to blub too! Some of Les Mis was filmed quite close to me in a church. In fact part of the church was turned into a tavern in the film!

  8. Oh I love a good cry; as soon as there is anything remotely sad on TV the girls look at me and ask if I am going to have tears!!
Good on you for doing the whole cinema thing; I'd settle for Mr Jackman's random noises anytime!

  9. I am a cryer too. I haven't seen this film yet. I was going tomorrow but the snow might put pay to that idea. Di x

  10. I loved Les Mis. Russell Crowe has his own band! He sings a song called Darby's Castke which might make you cry too!

  11. I never get to the cinema. I'll be a DVD girl too, and have a good cry as well. The amount I cry in general means I should be clean as a whistle inside!

  12. God, Anne Hathaway singing as her hair is chopped off in the trailer makes me cry. We would have been quite a pair! Of course, that would never happen coz (apart from our geographical disparity) I hate The Glums. Of all the musicals I've seen on the stage it's the only one I didn't enjoy. But I am a freak - my favourite is Jesus Christ Superstar (despite - or perhaps because of - my devout atheism) and when the giant cross lit up right at the end I totally sobbed. I was a very cool 24 year old then, too. Not a daft almost-forty mum who greets at everything! Chook is a lot like Hadley's kids - there were lots of sideways glances when we watched Brave over Christmas! !

Do share your maudlin playlists! I often find myself thinking "that would be an awesome funeral song! " so I do appreciate some lateral musical thunking!

  13. Interesting, I love musicals and while this one was well done, it is not a favorite of mine. But I did think Anne Hathaway was fabulous!

  16. Nooo, not a real, live, actual cinema?! I have mixed feelings about going to see this, because I've performed all the songs from it as a teenager, so it would probably be better to wait till it's on telly so I don't get told off for singing along ;o)

  17. I always have tissues in me...I'm always crying! Perhaps I should takea box when we go to see it next week?!

  21. Nothing wrong with sounding a bit mental either, let alone a good ol cry....I specialise in the first one all the time. Glad you had a great time. The OldBeloved says he would rather stick pins in his eyes though go and se The Glums so hunting company this weekend. Bit worried about Anne Hathaway though. She looked scary in the trailer?

  22. I hardly ever go to the pictures but now i'll remember take my hankies if I make it to see Les Mis. I do seem to like a good 'greet' these days - was crying watching 'wanted down under' the other day!

  23. we only discovered a few months ago that we could go to see films in English, not dubbed. The new cinemas are almost as comfy as being at home! It takes a lot for me to have a good cry!

  24. Ah, Russell. I think I will always love him… Haven't seen it yet but I already appreciate that they cast based on acting first, singing second.

  25. Friends invited me, and I went just because I ain't been the the cinema for about 6 years (isn't it expensive) and I've never seen Les Mis on stage, but I LOVED it, and such good acting, and with actors who can sing a whole song in one take - fab!

  26. Hehe, Diamond Nipples block ;) - it looks great.
    Yay for the proper cinema!
I've seen Les Miserables performed in a theatre and loved it too (and cried too). It's funny how I used to laugh at my Mum for crying and now I even sniffle while watching TV series and reading books. Oh, and there is a book called Pobby and Dingan which I love but which always leaves me in floods of tears.

  27. Absolutely not mental.
I have a bit of a soft spot for Russell Crowe so I'm pretty sure I'll cope with his singing even if a little suspect. Can't wait to see it but think I may have to wait for the DVD which won't be quite the same. Must have been such fun to have a real cinema experience - will be great to have one you can visit. 31. Not a big musical lover but I cry at pretty much all kids films, most notably The Snowman and the Snowdog (almost all the way through) and Up (OH and I both had to pause it and have a full on sob after about 5 minutes in before we regained composure and could watch it again).
