Spideys love, zippers not so much

Alas I still dont have any cushions to show.  They are still sitting on the sewing cupboard table in bits.  In fact, I'm avoiding them.  I've relocated to the dining cupboard, which is a little less cupboardy than the sewing cupboard.  My machine hates zips.  I've had one attempt end in tears already.  I'm sure I've said this before, but the presser foot comes down too heavy and makes everything shift too much.  But, I desperately want to get Sister-in-laws cushion done so I might break out the old "tank" sewing machine and see if it does better!

I had my Friday Night Lock-in at the Local Quilt Shop with Polly, which was a great laugh.  Anyone who falls about laughing at Jewellery fixings is fine by me.  (Ball ends.)  Polly made a bag, start to finish one night.  I managed 2 quilt blocks...  Still, there was pizza and cuppas AND chocolate.  Bet you wish you could come too!  I managed to get out without taking half the shop with me again (sorry Polly!) but I did spy a must-have notion I'm going back for...

Pre Fused Piping Cord!

How clever is that!  Shall be cheating a bit during a certain someones bag-along...

Since I cant show you the blocks I've been making (more secret stuff, sorry) I CAN show you the wonderful blocks that have come in so far for my long long awaited Spiders Web Quilt!  Check these beauties out.

How lucky am I?  I am getting so excited about these blocks!

My mans leave at home will be coming to an end sometime soon, which I'm preparing for by having unfinished sewing projects lying around waiting for me wherever I look.  (Thats the excuse anyway!)  Given that the kitchen and dining cupboard are one room really, all I need to do is put a project in the bathroom and I'll have occupied every room in the house...   All lavvy project suggestions on a postcard...  I think I might be due an almighty crash when he goes, I'm getting more dozy by the hour.  Hope I can hold if off for a week or so!  Already in the last week I've had hallucinations, falling asleep whilst talking, and have apparently offended someone online with my god awful memory.  At one point the other day I was sitting on the sofa with my man chatting then in my head I was utterly convinced I was back in the house I grew up in with my brother, accusing him of eating all the christmas cake.  My man is used to such nonsense, but honestly, when I came round I was gutted!  Almost cried cos my brother wasn't there.  (no christmas cake either...)   So, take note, if you are dealing with me and I ask the same thing repeatedly, or seem blunt, or dont show up for skype dates, or forget to reply to an email, or forget your real name / screen name etc I am apologising now.  Its nowt personal, and really, I'm not that bad a lass, just a tired one!

There's a wonderful article in the Guardian (click here) which, if you have time to look, will tell you all the same stuff I tell you about.  I cant begin to tell you how much of a relief it is for me to read it, even if only to hear that all the crazy crap happens to other people too!  However, I would advise you not to look at the comments on the article.  I wish I hadnt.

  8. Love the spidey blocks, they're fab! Hope you manage to ride over the bad stuff and are back on form soon :o). Maybe for a toilet project you could make one of those nice toilet roll covers that had space for a doll in the middle, so it looked like she was in a big dress, lovely! ;o)

  10. Who are the pillows for? Why not go with an envelope closure? I can't bear zip closures and much prefer envelopes and nothing to do with being easier. Anyway, rest up and enjoy those beautiful spider blocks - off to read the article :)

  11. Woaaaah! Spidery blocks are fab! Might have to rethink my yr 3 plan! Lol Read the article, very interesting, as we're some of the comments. Still wish you were closer, so do as Susan says, build up those energy levels for your visit, I can't wait! I think you're gonna need lots of cushions :)

  13. Fab spidey blocks, will be a great quilt. Hope your tank tackles the zips better. Like the look of your piping stuff. Fascinating article, hopefully the research will be able to help one day. Juliex

  15. we had a man come round and talk soffits and fascias at me last week (yawn!). He mentioned the ball end of my fascia - I sniggered for about half an hour and got "pull yourself together" looks from laughing boy :)

  16. It's going to be a wonderful quilt! The article was really interesting (although I didn't like the tone of the first four 'paragraphs') and I hope that the research helps scientists discover medications that can help while they find a cure. It's very easy to think that narcolepsy 'just' means that people fall asleep a lot and I salute you for sharing some of your more frightening/distressing symptoms. Take care - you know where I am if you need me xxx

  18. fab blocks- but I am afraid I am off to phone the trade discriptions bods asn you clearly are no longer keeping to your perported cupboard so can no,longer claim the NIAC title. I think you need to rename the blog, more "Narcolpetic all over the house" given your current rate of distribution teehee. Very oddly worded article by the way - tend to agree with Wonderdog here though. keep well xx

  21. Yes, those spidey blocks are great! And thanks for giving the link to the article, know a bit more about narcolepsis now. Take care of yourself!!

  22. You could also test drive attaching a zipper by hand. I used to sew all of mine by hand, to clothes and everything, until I got the hang of zippers' ways and started to sew them by machine. Controlling that both sides are attached the same way is simple by hand, and it doesn't take all that long either. Just an idea.

  23. "Narcoleptic all over the house"!? Bua-ha-ha!! Your spiders are beautiful - great idea for a bee block!

Re: the Guardian comments. I think it's helpful to remember that there's a lot of the same people repeatedly gobbing off and that many more people called them out on it. Some folk are just iggerant feckers - the sort that think if you have depression you should just pull yourself together. Or that think I'm selfish and vain for only having 1 child (I shit you not). Ignore and move on, wee dude!

  25. Aw chick! Don't be pushing yourself too hard! Sounds like your body is trying to tell you to take your foot off the gas a bit! I'm not going to read the article cos I love you just the way you are! Jxo

  26. You can sew the zipper by hand if you like or an envelop closure is usually what I do. I did use my walking foot to sew a zipper on a pouch too and it worked so maybe try that? I love the blocks, I put mine to you in the mail today on the way home from work. Interesting article and interesting times at your house, you have a most interesting and I bet annoying condition, maybe the Italian research will be helpful. Anyway, you shall not annoy me no matter what you do.

  27. Sarah, why not do a pillowslip back instead of putting in a zip? You can do the underlap in something very simple, and then put a button, or a popper on if you feel the need. That way you can ditch the zip, and stop the tears!
    Love the cheery spiders!

  29. Aww, lass, I'm so happy to be a part of your spiders web quilt. The blocks look so cool together.
I'm sorry about the crazy crap happening to you, hope you get a bit of rest. And thanks for talking about it, you know I like you very much no matter what, but it helps to understand what you have to deal with.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you winning the zipper battles.
